Dr Susan Lark’s Personal Story
“Since my early teenage years, I suffered from several very common female complaints—menstrual cramps, PMS, benign breast disease and irregular menstrual periods. Throughout my teens and twenties I found very few treatment options available to me for my symptoms except aspirin, hot water bottles, and lying in bed for hours in pain, hoping my painful cramps would stop.
Since I suffered from PMS, my menstrual cramps were preceded by days of anxiety, irritability, bloating, and food cravings. It is no wonder that I regarded each period with apprehension. Although my parents were caring, I received absolutely no information from them on the importance of nutrition and exercise in preventing and relieving my symptoms. In fact, they were unaware that our high fat, high sugar diet was actually contributing to my symptoms.
My PMS, menstrual cramp and other symptoms continued to be quite severe throughout college and medical school. As a doctor-in-training, I had access to the best medical care. I tried every medication possible that might help me—pain pills, muscle relaxants, and antispasmodics—but these only relieved my symptoms temporarily.
I still remember when I was a medical student how distraught I was by my episodes of menstrual cramps that were severe enough to compel me to leave the hospital ward. I would go to the medical student’s on-call room and suffer through the agony of vise-like pain and cramps.
My situation changed during my first postgraduate year of medical training during which I spent quite a bit of time reading the new medical research in my field. By chance, I spotted an article in an obstetrics and gynecology journal on the use of nutrition to treat breast cysts.
I had never been exposed to the concept of nutrition as therapy before. In fact, it had never occurred to me that what I ate could affect my state of health. I was intrigued and fascinated by the article, which described the successful treatment of breast lumps with the use of vitamins.
I started spending time in the medical library searching for information on the treatment of menstrual disorders, and other female health issues, through diet and nutrition. I was amazed to find that there was a body of medical and scientific research in this field going back decades- yet I had never been aware of it!
I began to test an all-natural, safe and effective program on myself. I made important dietary changes and cut out sugar, fat, and caffeine, which had been the mainstay of my diet. As a medical student, I had depended on “fast food” such as cola drinks, coffee, donuts, and pizza to help me stay awake and provide a quick source of energy during busy late nights taking care of patients.
As I started cutting down on my processed food intake, I began eating a much more healthful whole food diet including more fresh vegetables and fruits, whole grains, legumes and free-range meats. I also began to incorporate into my diet special, therapeutic, foods that my research told me would support my female hormonal health and the nutritional needs of my body. I also developed a very effective vitamin and mineral program for myself, based on my research findings in nutritional medicine.
I was amazed at the results. My symptoms, which had plagued me for years, began to diminish each month. My quality of life improved dramatically as my symptoms receded. I felt better than I had in my entire life. With this healthier diet, my symptoms disappeared completely and never came back. My menstrual periods became painless and symptom-free. I began to have periods that never interfered with my life, again. In fact, they became so comfortable that I never knew when they were going to start, except for the fact that I kept a menstrual calendar.
This is how every part of our lives should be. We should be vital and healthy at every phase of our lives, no matter what our age, without the interference of uncomfortable and, even crippling, health issues.
I was my own first patient and was thrilled to find out first-hand how beneficial a healthy diet and nutritional program can be. Since then, I have seen many of my patients regain their health and vitality with my innovative health programs, as well. Through my new series of books, I share my breakthrough information and all natural, safe and effective programs with you, as well, so that you can enjoy the level of radiant health and well-being that you are meant to have.”
