In today’s busy world we fuel up on coffee, red bull and sugar just to stay afloat. However, the ingredients in these drinks can cause a host of problems such as weight gain, kidney damage, dehydration and poor health habits. Instead of resorting to a chemical energy boost, try recharging yourself naturally.

Here are five simple and effective ways to increase your energy and alertness in a healthy, natural way.

1.   Sleep More

While it comes as no surprise that getting more shut-eye will make you feel more energized, it also comes with an abundance of other benefits as well. By getting at least 7 hours of sleep each night not only will you feel more refreshed and awake but you will also stave off weight gain, have less stress, better skin and even live longer. Try to manage your time so that nothing gets in the way of you and your beauty sleep.

2.   Drink More Water

In efforts to stay awake and have more energy, many people turn to drinking caffeinated drinks including soda, coffee and energy beverages. However the caffeine in these drinks can cause your body to dehydrate, which can lead to headaches, dizziness and ironically, fatigue. Instead of riding this caffeine-fueled roller coaster, drink water instead.

As our bodies are made up of 70% water, maintaining this level and keeping your body in its natural state will keep you from feeling sluggish and tired.

Also, by drinking 6-8 cups of water daily you will help flush your body of toxins, making your cells naturally more efficient. If you still can’t live without your daily espresso shot, make sure you drink equal parts of both coffee and water to counteract the dehydrating effects of caffeine.

3.   Eat Less Processed Foods

If you have a busy lifestyle, eating fast food meals and convenience foods helps you fuel up while on the go. However these foods which supposedly give you lots of energy actually do the opposite. When you feed your body unnatural, processed foods, it takes your body much more time and effort to break it down. As your body uses lots of energy to digest your food you could feel fatigue and have less energy.

Instead of tiring your body by forcing it to digest processed foods, cook natural meals made in your Xtrema cookware. Eating fruits, vegetables, nuts and grains that haven’t been chemically altered or processed will make digestion much less difficult for your body. Also, eating naturally nutritious foods will help provide your body with vitamins, minerals and electrolytes to keep you going all day.

4.   Take a Natural Supplement

If after changing your diet and sleeping more you still need more energy, think about taking a  natural vitamin supplement. Taking a B6 or B12 vitamin will help your body metabolize and harvest more energy from the foods that you eat, helping you feel more awake. If you suffer from anemia or don’t eat many foods right in iron, taking an iron supplement could help give you more energy. An iron supplement works by producing more red blood cells, which help oxygenate your body better.

By moving more oxygen through the blood stream, your body will be able to function better. As always, when taking a supplement, be sure to first consult your doctor.

5.   Do Yoga

While it’s true that yoga can help you feel more calm and relaxed; any yogi knows that trying not to fall asleep in Savasana is one of the hardest parts of the class. However, practicing yoga can also help you feel energized and refreshed. Certain yoga poses and breathing exercises help to oxygenate your bloodstream and energize your body, helping you to feel less fatigued. Make yoga a part of your morning routine (a 10-minute practice is all you need) to feel more refreshed throughout the day.

If you find yourself consistently fueling up on energy drinks, but feeling like you’re running on empty, it’s time to make a change. Adjusting your diet, sleep schedule and incorporating yoga into your lifestyle can help you feel less fatigued and have more energy the natural way. So the next time you feel tempted to grab a cup of coffee, instead choose a natural method to energize, your body will thank you for it.
