With the never-ending search for the fountain of youth, many have been led to desperately spend countless dollars on facial creams, plastic surgery, and even undergo beauty treatments such as the á la vampire facial treatment.
Over $4 billion a year is spent on the US skincare industry’s creams, lotions, serums, and tones; promising the illusion of eternal youth and to help reduce the appearance of wrinkles, sagging skin and fine lines.
However, the secret to achieving younger-looking skin doesn’t come from a miracle cream or the hands of a plastic surgeon, but from your lifestyle.
1. Follow a Proper Skin Care Routine
Always be sure to use sun protection as sun damage is one of the most common causes of early aging. The majority of Americans love a great tan, this allows the sun to penetrate the skin, over doing it though, can cause serious damage to skin cells.
Studies show 80% of women don’t properly wash their make-up off. Cleaning your skin is vital, as your skin is constantly renewing itself, leading to a large build-up of dead skin cells. The dead skin cell residue, paired with pollutants or sweat, can leave a negative effect on your face.
Proper maintenance is different for everyone as skin types vary, but the universal routine for achieving great skin works like this:
- Remove all your makeup, use coconut or olive oil rather than makeup remover.
- Cleanse the face with facial soap and water.
- Then rinse off.
2. Eat “Good” Fats & Superfoods
Healthy bodies rely on healthy fats to help look their best, as the essential fatty acids like omega-3 and omega-6 are key elements in boosting a naturally healthy skin.
These healthy fats are considered building blocks of healthy cell membranes, which help promote the production of the skin’s natural oil barrier, helping to keep skin internally plumper, hydrated and youthful.
A healthy diet is important to our overall well-being, and superfoods are a great source of natural anti-aging properties, rich in antioxidants – helping to
prevent cell damage. Our bodies are exposed to free radicals every day, Super fruits like strawberries, blueberries, apples, kiwis, bananas, and cherries are rich in fiber, antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and other nutrients that work as a skin brightener, help you live longer, reduce certain skin pigmentation disorders and achieve younger-looking skin.
3. Exfoliate Naturally
Apply moisturizer – lightweight or heavy duty – depending on your skin type.
With a large variety of brands, functions, and methods of applications – the options for beauty care are endless. But your skin requires some essentials for proper nourishment; namely plenty of water, Alpha Lipoic Acid, Retinol and Vitamin C. Next time you’re in the market searching for a new moisturizer, make sure it has at least one of these organic ingredients to help you achieve youthful skin.
4. Stay Hydrated
When your body lacks hydration (water), vitamins and quality rest, the skin will be the first vital organ to show symptoms. This makes it extremely important to stay hydrated. As we begin to age, our skin and skin-type can slowly lose the ability to retain water, making it essential to consume the proper amount of water each day. Aim for at least 64 ounces of purified water every day.
5. Exercise
The obvious benefit of physical activity is to help you lose weight, maintain a healthy lifestyle and fight disease. But did you know that exercise can affect your DNA and make you younger? Research shows that regular exercisers had significantly younger skin when compared to their non-active peers. Getting at least 30 minutes of exercise a day can help you look ten years younger, especially if you perform High-Intensity Interval Training, which kicks anti-aging hormones into full gear.
How do you do this exactly? Instead of jogging at an easy four mph, switch it up by sprinting for 30 seconds, then jog for three minutes and repeat. Whatever you do, just keep going, as just 30 minutes a day, can add to a longer life.
BONUS TIP: Sleep more and Stress less.
Poor sleep can result in irritability, fatigue, lack of energy and concentration. When your body is deprived of sleep, your skin suffers and puffy eye bags, dark circles, fine lines, and especially wrinkles can result. Stress causes the body to release a hormone called cortisol that inhibits the production of collagen. Collagen is vital to repair and fortify your skin.
To end off…
Aging may be inevitable, but the secret to achieving healthy young skin isn’t about a temporary miracle potion or cosmetic procedure; it’s about building a strong, healthy foundation, restoring your skin from the inside out.
